The biggest plus for me in Waitrose is how well the shelves are stocked and presented. They take more pride in appearance because they want to maintain this perception they are a better class of supermarket. Plus they have some really interesting products. Much better than your aldi or Lidl.

Fascinating. New Zealand prices similar. You could have been buying for my dinners. Chicken thighs, leeks. Salmon sushi . Yum. My favourite dinners. I would buy enough for a week. I think you buy for a day or two. What an enormous supermarket. A bit dreary. Ours are bright and more colourful.. We have narrow isles and people quite friendly though not now with distancing. We have signs at the end of each aisle telling you what there is. I have plenty of toilet paper too. No pets ? Me neither now. Sadly. Do so enjoy your postings. Tomorrow I will go on a walk with you 😊

The shelves and product displays at Waitrose are always top notch, everything lined up, facing the right way and done with symmetry, Waitrose isn't necessarily the most pricey shop, they have, their own low cost essentials range as well.

Used to live in London, almost never went to Waitrose for my grocery, thought the price was better at Tesco/Sainsbury's. Surprised at how one's perception can change so drastically because everything to me seems so reasonably priced now, compared with any random supermarkets in Tokyo (except for the sushi obviously!). Meat and dairy products are much more expensive here, you'll have to go to a wholesale store only to get the price at the same level as Waitrose.

    • @Matt19matt19
      @Matt19matt19 4 года назад +2

And Waitrose is one of the most expensive supermarkets. I don't really rate meat from supermarkets here in the UK. I'd imagine Japan has really good quality meat generally. In the uk you're better off going to a proper local butchers for decent quality meat. Waitrose is a higher priced supermarket but they do budget ranges and lower prices stuff too. Overall in Waitrose you're going to get a much better shopping experience and find more interesting products than you would in a Tesco or Sainsbury's.

Waitrose us one of most expensive supermarkets in the UK along with Marks and Spencer, although the quality of food in both is considered better. Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi are all cheaper more or less in that order. Fresh produce is similar in all but tends to last longer in the top two, they also do better quality ready meals, bread, cakes, desserts.

My mom lives in the L.A. area, Gardena. She goes to either Walmart or Food Max, since it’s just her living at home, she saves a lot more. Those stores you mentioned, and there’s also Gelson’s, my in-laws always shopped at Gelsons when they lived in Santa Barbara, they could afford to but those stores are like fancy gourmet, organic kinds of groceries, locally made, imported, and paying extra for the name brands and of the store name, it’s all is over priced but some really good things to buy. A lot of people like good quality food... Stores like Von’s and Abertson’s, even Trader Joe’s, are getting a bit pricier but that’s why more people go to Walmart, Target, Winco and Food Max, and Aldi, you still can cook a gourmet meal from the food they sell! 😁😉

Unless it is a full-face sealed rubber N95 mask, it won't stop a virus.... a t-shirt, scarf or bandanna are acceptable, as are face visors, but since they give no protection, what is the point? You have more chance of getting hit by lightening but we don't all walk around wearing earthing-rods... Compliance is for fools.

I'm surprised they haven't changed it and done it like Sainsbury's do ( reduce it then put it back where it should go but at the front) as I can't imagine it's good practice to have an area where lots of people will congregate and an item could potentially be picked up and put down 20 times before being bought.

I've just watched this, in Japan, with my Japanese girlfriend, and she was surprised by the cheaper prices (even in an expensive place, like Waitrose), compared to most Japanese supermarkets. She was also impressed by the variety of different food.
Usually, we go shopping in Costco in Japan, to get something like a more Western (i.e., "better") overall shipping experience, although I do like to dip into the average Japanese supermarket or convenience store to top up on smaller things or get some snacks.
We also shop online, such as Amazon, or "The Meat Guy" website in Japan (to get British or foreign food too), plus use IKEA Japan. If I really must get foreign things, I have used the smaller foreign style shops (for PG Tips, etc), but their queues and lack of tills are disgraceful.
If only Japanese supermarkets could be brought up to the better levels of British supermarkets...

Crazy because comparing those prices to regular grocery stores here in Southern California like Vons, Ralphs, Sprouts, Trader Joe's the prices in London seem to be comparable or even cheaper. If you go to our "luxury" grocery stores like Wholefoods, Gelson's, Bristol Farms, the prices at Waitrose are definitely a steal. I had imagined London to be more expensive than California or NYC in regards to groceries.

It's for people who would rather pay more than have to wash a potato or leek. I shop in Asda, it has everything I need, I don't buy processed food, and would probably pay far more in Waitrose for the same products Waitrose is more for people who don't have to count the pennies.

I’m not all that shocked to see people so blatantly ignoring/disregarding the mandatory face mask covering rule. I work at a grocery store over here in America and I see a handful of people a day not wear them, even though it’s been mandatory since I want to say the beginning of June. Some do have medical exemptions, but then there are others who just do not care. I loved the video, I think it’s the first one in this style that I’ve found, I need to look for more. I was born in England, I miss the supermarkets the most for some odd reason?

There are three ways to pay at most U.K. supermarkets, cash, credit/debit card (using chip and pin) or contactless. Contactless can be used via an enabled credit/debt card or using an electronic device with an app linked to your credit/debit card such as Sage Pay/Apple Pay/Google Pay. If paying by 'contactless' the maximum transaction you can pay with that method is £45 (prior to the pandemic it was £30), which is sufficient for most people doing a quick shop. With contactless you simply touch the icon, contactless, on the screen them touch or closely hover your card or device over the screen of the payment pad.
many people like this way as it's quicker and involves less touching of foreign objects (all the screens and pads are wiped down after each use (though there maybe a couple that haven't had chance to be cleaned before another user uses it), making things a more pleasant experience, certainly taking into account it can be quite uncomfortable to wear a mask for long periods for some people.

flatironnewyork it’s very common here in the UK. Many supermarkets have them. My husband calls the barcode gun a zapper. Many have apps that do the same thing. It’s great as you can zap your groceries. Put them in your bags as you go around the shop. Then you just pay for your shopping at the end. You do not have put everything from the cart for the cashier to process. Also to pay we tend to use contactless or use our phones. It means that you do not have to touch anything. It's more common now in most supermarkets. You just place your bags in the trolley and pack as you go around. Then pay at the end. There's an element of trust involved and usually you need to register either using the stores loyalty card or some other details. It's more than likely the first few times of using it you'll get a security check at the end. Also if say you scan something and then remove it (if say you put it back) you'll also get the security check. Presumably some algorithm knows what sort of scanning behaviour to pick up on. Usually it'll do a security check if you don't spend a lot and only have a few items.
